Le poker a besoin de tous les types de personnalités, ceci contribue à garder la fraicheur et l'imprévisibilité du jeu. Si j'admet que les grandes gueules sont indispensables, je crois aussi que les gentlemen le sont tout autant. Beaucoup de personnalités ont contribué à l'essor du poker mais si je devais désigner un des meilleurs ambassadeur pour le poker, ce serait Mike Sexton. Mike Sexton a été a de multiples reprises félicité pour l'ampleur de sa contribution avant de recevoir l'honneur suprême en étant dernière introduit au Poker Hall of Fame pour lequel il a été le seul nomminé.
L'enfance de Sexton:
Michael Richard Sexton est né le 22 septembre 1947 à Shelby, dans l'Indiana mais a passé la plus grande partie de son enfance à Dayton dans l'Ohio. Les parents de Sexton avait plusieurs occupations professionnelles pour subvenir à leur besoin, dont celle de professeur de dance. A son adolescence, Sexton ne jouait pas au poker mais excellait en athlétistime et en gymmastique. Son talent sur certains agrets lui valut d'être recruté dans l'équipe de son collège et lui permirent de gagner une bourse pour l'université de l'Ohio. Entre temps, Sexton avait découvert le poker lors de ces années lycée.
La passion du bridge:
Sexton avait également été initié au bridge qui était en fait sa principale passion. Sexton aimait le bridge à tel point qu'il devint enseignant de cette discipline pendant une année. Une fois son diplôme universitaire en poche, Sexton s'engagea dans la 82nd Airborne Division, une infanterie d'élite de l'armée américaine en 1970 mais ne participa pas aux opérations militaires du Vietnam, sa division étant revenue au pays peu après l'enrolement de Sexton. De ce fait, Sexton passa 2 années à jouer au poker et à enseigner les dances de salons, comme le firent ses parents.
Des débuts professionnels modestes:
Les collègues d'armée de Sexton pensait que celui ci avait toutes les qualités pour devenir un bon vendeur. C'est ainsi que Sexton commença à vendre des fournitures au magasin du bureau de poste de la base militaire de Fort Bragg tout en donnant des cours de danse et de bridge pour agrémenter ses revenus. Sexton continuait à jouer au poker et à raser les tables de cash game de l'état de Caroline du Nord. Sa passion pour le poker et ses divers jobs tenaient Sexton régulièrement éloigné de son foyer et le conduisirent à divorcer de son épouse en 1978. C'est à ce moment que Sexton abandonna sesdiverses occupation professionnelles pour devenir joueur de poker pro.
Sexton passe pro:
Sexton avouait que ses 1eres années en tant que joueur professionnel furent difficiles. Sexton officiait comme entraineur d'une petite équipe de baseball et ne disposait pas de suffisamment de temps libre pour participer aux plus gros tournois du circuit, dont les WSOP. Toutefois, il rentrait dans les places payées d'un des tournois les plus populaires de l'époque, le tournoi Amarillo Slim’s Super Bowl of Poker. Sexton terminait à la 3eme place du tournoi de Razz à 1,000$ de buy-in pour un gain de 9,500$. ceci n'était pas une incroyable performance mais additionné à de bons résultats en cash game, Sexton pouvait continuer à poursuivre ses rêves de joueur professionnel.
Sexton à l'attaque des WSOP:
Au millieu des années 80, sexton réalisa qu'il était temps pour lui de passer au niveau supérieur en partant à l'assaut des tables de Las Vegas. Sexton rentrait dans les places payées de ces 2 1ers tournois WSOP pour un gain global de $13,200, de quoi envisager le futur avec beaucoup de confiance. Entre 1984 et 198, Sexton allait avoir beaucoup de résultats à 5 chiffres et gagnait son 1er bracelet WSOP dans l'event $1,500 Seven Card-Stud Split pour $104,400 de gain.
Un impressionnant palmarès en poker de tournoi:
Bien que Sexton n'ait jamais gagné d'autres bracelets WSOP, il affiche à son palmarés 45 cash in en tournois dont une 12eme place lors du tournoi Main Event des WSOP 2000 . Sexton remportait également l'édition 2010 de l' European Finals of Poker pour un gain de 169,000$. Sexton remportait également un gain de 1m$ dans le tournoi Tournament of Champions (un tournoi fondé par Sexton quin'existe plus aujourd'hui) mais il est plus connu pour être « la voix » du poker et avoir développé l'image de cette discipline comme personne.
Le meilleur ambassadeur du poker:
Déjà sponsorisé par Party Poker, Sexton était propulsé à la présentation du WPT aux côtés de Vince Van Patten. Celui ci collabora également à de nombreux magasines spécialisés, dont Card Player et Gambling Times Magazine.
Sexton a également donné une bonne partie de ses gains à des oeuvres carritatives dont la ½ des 1m$ gagnés lors du Tournament of Champions et a fondé le site PokerGives.org afin de faciliter les dons des joueurs de poker aux organismes caritatifs de leur choix. En raison de son immense contribution, Sexton a été élu meilleur ambassadeur du poker par le magasine Card Player.
Une introduction au Hall of Fame du poker à l'unanimité:
Sexton fut d'ailleurs l'unique nominé pour le Poker Hall of Fame en 2009. ceci étant une 1er, plusieurs personnes ayant déjà été élues de concert lors des années précédentes « Je suis profondément honoré d'être introduit au Poker Hall of Fame , d'autant plus que pour la 1er fois, le public, les membres de la presse spécialisée et les membres existants du Hall of Fame ont procédé aux votes. Je suis très heureux que les membres du Hall of Fame m'aient accepté dans leur club très privé! » déclarait Sexton dans un communiqué de presse.
